Factors & Limits
1. Health and safety is of paramount consideration for the interpretative activities
and facilities.
Event records should be maintained to document visitor numbers to establish patterns of
attendance and initiate appropriate staffing coverage. Where staff and volunteers are responsible
for public groups on site, risk assessments must be carried out and the leader should be equipped
with a first aid kit and radio/phone. Parents must accompany children on Kidsgang events. Poor
attendance of events is usually attributable to uncontrollable factors such as weather which may
also effect whether an event proceeds or has an alternative itinerary.
- Target: to take appropriate precautions
for public events based on prior risk
assessment.
2. Corporate image. Advice, funding and ratification may be sought from the promotions
and
publication staff/teams. Sign layout and graphics have been consistent with the Gibraltar Point
house style and logo. The LWT name features prominently alongside the Wildlife Trusts logo as
recommended by the National Office guidelines for their corporate image. These considerations
will need to be recognised in any future sign production. In addition to the main focus, which is site-
based work, it is important to raise the profile of the Trust and nature conservation through outreach
work and giving talks to outside bodies/community groups. Staff and volunteers on site are
important ambassadors for the Trust, whether dealing with the public on a formal or informal basis.
All staff and volunteers are encouraged to promote the LWT and encourage membership. Gibraltar
Point is one of the main centres for membership recruitment outside of the door-to door campaign.
- Target: The LWT name and logo should
be prominent on all publications and materials
and all opportunities should be taken to raise the profile of the Trust.
3. Over 40,000 people visit the visitor centre during a year. Its location to the
south of main car
park, means that visitors do not have to pass by it or through it to enter the main reserve and this
may reduce the number of potential visitors. However, increased efforts to raise the profile of the
centre and indeed the Trust are being pursued through designs for new fascia boards and signs.
The Centres Forum is a national body, set up to discuss current visitor and visitor centre issues.
Gibraltar Point should continue to be represented on this forum.
- Target: to keep the centre open for
peak visitor periods and ensure it is an example of
best practise.
4. Promotions. An events team is an important planning and advertising forum. Details
of events
should be listed in the Countryside events leaflet, (available from the Visitor Centre), Wash events
programme, and on the web site. Posters and/or events leaflets are be displayed at Tourist
Information Centres and other venues in town (including library and through the hoteliers
association) as well as at the Visitor Centre and reserve noticeboards. County radio and natural
history/country magazines also provide advertising media. Controllable factors such as timing, poor
advertising or clashes with events in Skegness like the Carnival should be taken into account.
- Target: to have an events team to
oversee a programme of activities and associated
promotions.
5. Publications. For independent visitors, it is important to maintain a range of
portable information
guides, which can be taken onto site. A colour habitat map and simple leaflet are available from
the Visitor Centre. Present gaps in the provision of reserve interpretation are an updated leaflet
and
walkabout guide. The NNR has never had a full colour A4 leaflet and this must be seen as a
priority shortfall to address now that other aspects of interpretation have been updated. The leaflet
should feature a simple map with annotated habitat information, bylaw reminders etc. A
replacement walkabout guide is a longer-term aspiration; to rework text and artwork and
accommodate new footpaths and additional land and facilities e.g. hides.
- Target: to provide an attractive and
current range of portable interpretative material.
