In making contact with nature we activate
centres where we create notions about nature in our store of
mental perceptions. They often come unbidden to live in our
thoughts and emotions, with intangible qualities very real to
us. It is not unusual to have such a relationship with the
earth, with the actions of water, wind, and fire. It has been said
that we could be sensing the vitality of the invisible beings that
inform the elements of place?
We adjust these notions to make the inner scene
compelling, creating an inner magnificent landscape as in a final
'painting'. But its communication could be by using words or
musical notes to make a composition with colour contrast,
transitions, and perspective. A personal experience can
prompt the selection of literary or artistic techniques to
manoeuvre the notional elements into the right composition for its
final expression as a poem, painting or essay. In this respect there
is a dearth of poetry, music and painting expressing notions about
Skomer, which probably reflects the difficulty of transcribing
notions into material communications, rather than the failure of
the island experience to generate such responses.
