Neighbourhoods with Wildlife!
A call for action to promote the networking of community conservation plans for neighbourhood biodiversity

This website introduces a new, on-line voluntary organisation ‘Neighbourhoods With Wildlife’ inspired by a citizen’s environmental network organised by the National Wildlife Federation of the USA.

The aim of NWW is to promote simple PC tools and web interfaces to help volunteers make community conservation plans for neighbourhood biodiversity that adhere to well-established professional principles of conservation management. In this context the inspiration was the professional conservation management system promoted by the UK Conservation Management System Consortium.

The tool kit of ‘Neighbourhoods With Wildlife’, which is also applicable to other types of community action plans, ensures continuity of operations at community level and the networking of outcomes as performance indicators.  The system is based on a community diary and free public access to a communication network with a bulletin board and forum.  The project is supported with an e-learning package for on-line training in conservation management.

The first version of ‘Neighbourhoods With Wildlife’ was set up as a paper system in 1994 at the St Clear’s Teachers Resource Centre in the old Welsh county of Dyfed.

The Practical Model

The practical model is a community-level management system applicable to all neighbourhood actions for sustainability. The management system ensures continuity of operations at community level and the networking of outcomes as performance indicators.  The system is based a community diary with public access to a national network through a web viewer with a bulletin board and forum, and is supported with an e-learning package about biodiversity and on-line training in conservation management.
