Creating  likenesses of persons, places or phenomena
Between 1840 and 1880 artists became immersed in the depiction of objective phenomena of  nature in a combination of nature and realism with the motive of understanding the living world.  They painted their pictures on the spot.  Precise observation enabled them to achieve extremely  sensitive, expressive forms linked with an attempt to represent reality as clearly as possible.  Some of these pictures in the eyes of the present day have a remarkable quality of colour  photographs.
