1.      The total area of Hippophae scrub coverage will be measured once during the reporting cycle, via aerial photography.
*        Target: there should be no significant decrease of coverage from the 1999 NVC survey on the fixed dunes.  NB Loss of this feature through physical removal is acceptable where there is an overriding need to conserve other priority habitat features eg yellow dune, grey dune or slack.
2.   Proportion of Hippophae rhamnoides within the scrub community.  Hawthorn and elder are valuable components of this scrub community, but they may be deemed negative factors where out- competing Hippophae.
*        Target: favourable condition for Hippophae scrub is currently being researched and may result in limits being set for loss of Hippophae in this respect.
3.      Key areas of Hippophae scrub will be surveyed once during the reporting cycle to visually assess the extent and proportions of the different age classes.  Some assessment of the coverage of established male and female blocks will also constitute a useful measure.
*        Target: a baseline needs to be established for desired extent of the age classes. Young growth is classed as <5 years old.  Mature growth is classed as >20 years old.  Comparison of dated aerial photos will assist in determining the age of scrub blocks. Coppicing regimes aim to perpetuate these age classes.
